Endodontics

What is Endodontics?

Endodontics is a branch of dentistry that deals with the treatment of the inside of the tooth, more precisely the root canals. Inflammation of the dental pulp (a network of vessels and nerves inside the tooth), also known as pulpitis, can arise due to:

  • Dental caries (by far the most common cause)
  • Tooth injuries (e.g., a fracture)
  • Tooth wear

If pulpite is not treated, it can lead to granulomas or gangrene, and subsequently to tooth loss. Inflammation of the dental pulp is treated by the dentist.

How to recognize inflammation?

Inflammation caused by decay, once it reaches the nerve, most frequently manifests as an intense and constant throbbing pain that can radiate to other teeth or areas of the head. You might experience sensitivity to hot and cold, your gums might swell, or the colour of your tooth might noticeably change.

To prevent the further spread of inflammation, endodontic treatment is necessary.

How is root canal treatment performed?

We know how unpleasant a toothache can be, which is why at Feeldent, we help you cure inflammation with modern methods and equipment, and an approach focused on your well-being, so as to preserve your teeth and a healthy smile. We will do everything possible to make the endodontic treatment as smooth as possible and resolve the problems quickly.

Root canal treatment proceeds in five phases:

Diagnosis

First, we perform an examination and, if necessary, an X-ray to determine the extent of the inflammation. After the visit, we will discuss treatment options with you.

The extent of endodontic treatment depends on the state of the inflammation. Before the procedure, we will ensure local anesthesia; however, if the inflammation is advanced, you may still feel some pain. We will do our best to reduce it to the minimum possible.

From the root canals, we remove the inflamed and necrotic pulp tissue (the dead nerve), and thoroughly clean and disinfect the canals.

The cleaned root canals are filled with a special material that prevents the entry of bacteria.

The tooth is reconstructed with a filling or a crown, restoring its functionality and aesthetics.

An endodontically treated (or healed) tooth is harmless to the organism.

What is the difference between using a filling for caries and endodontic treatment?

A filling is usually used when the dentist removes the caries or only the affected part of the tooth. The resulting cavity is then filled with a filling. Endodontic treatment, on the other hand, is necessary when the caries reaches the nerve and it becomes inflamed. If the inflammation is extensive, the endodontist dentist removes the inflamed nerve (pulpectomy), cleans the root canals, and fills them with a special material. Subsequently, the tooth is sealed with a crown or a filling.

The treatment takes place under local anesthesia, minimizing pain.

The duration of root canal treatment depends on the complexity of the case, but it usually takes one or two sessions. The approach is individual, depending on your specific case.

In rare cases, when the inflammation does not subside despite endodontic treatment, we can help you with an apicectomy. This is a small surgical procedure that removes the root tip and the surrounding inflammation. Apicectomy is a painless procedure, routinely performed by a surgeon or periodontist.

After treatment, the tooth might be sensitive for a few days, but this sensation will soon subside. In some cases, slight pain is possible, which can be alleviated with common painkillers. It is important to maintain good oral hygiene.

The sooner you decide to undergo treatment, the sooner the problem will be resolved, thus preventing the inflammation from spreading to other teeth. Therefore, do not hesitate to visit our practice. We strive to make you feel as relaxed and safe as possible with us. Book an appointment.
